A brown bear has attacked and seriously injured a mushroom hunter in Slovakia. The 66-year-old man was taken to hospital by helicopter, emergency services said.
According to emergency services, the 66-year-old suffered injuries mainly to his hands and legs, but was conscious and out of danger. Despite his injuries, he was able to call the emergency services himself after the attack.
Prevent worse
As TV news channel TA3 and public television STVR reported, the man had collected mushrooms in the undergrowth of a forest area belonging to the northwestern Slovak municipality of Kanianka and probably surprised the bear. An STVR reporter surmised that he had fended off the animal with his mushroom basket, at least saving it from even more serious injuries.
Police urged the public to be careful
Police urged people in the area to be careful. The state brown bear conservation team is already on its way to investigate the incident.
According to official counts, there are approximately 1,200 wild bears in Slovakia. They usually avoid people if they notice them in time. However, attacks can occur in the event of an unexpected encounter or if mother animals see that their young are in danger.
Deadly attack in early October
In early October, such a collision was fatal for a mushroom hunter. Since the beginning of the year, more than 40 so-called problem bears have been shot in Slovakia, which repeatedly ventured into human settlements and even urban areas and were therefore considered a threat to humans. The shootings are politically controversial.
