Arrest in Germany – Libyan planned attack on Israeli embassy

Date:

An attack on the Israeli embassy in Germany has apparently been foiled. A suspected supporter of the Islamic State terrorist organization was arrested in Bernau, near Berlin.

A spokeswoman for the Israeli embassy in Berlin confirmed to the German news agency that there was a plan to attack the diplomatic mission. Ambassador Ron Prosor thanked German security authorities “for ensuring the security of our embassy.” The suspect’s apartment in Bernau, near Berlin, was searched, a spokesperson for the federal prosecutor’s office told dpa. In the Rhein-Sieg district of North Rhine-Westphalia, emergency services searched the apartment of a person who was not a suspect.

Crucial tip from foreign intelligence services
According to a report in Bild, German authorities targeted the Libyan after a specific tip from foreign intelligence services. The newspaper writes that it is still unclear whether the planned attack should be carried out with weapons or explosives. There were indications that after the attack the suspect wanted to flee to his uncle in Saint Augustine and then go abroad.

Asylum rejected, but not yet deported
The arrested man will be brought before an investigating judge of the Federal Court of Justice (BGH) on Sunday. The judge must then decide whether pre-trial detention will be imposed. According to reports, the man should actually have been deported after a negative asylum decision.
