Danger of collapse – Murder of Weingarten: body is still in the basement

Date:

After the gruesome murder of Barbara R. on Friday, the investigation was still in full swing on Sunday. The suspect Oleg M. is said to have blown himself up in the cellar of a wine grower in Zistersdorf – now the tunnel is in danger of collapsing. The lifeless body is still downstairs and an identity check will take place “in the foreseeable future”, the police said.

The investigators assume that the deceased is 59-year-old Slovak citizen Oleg M. The cellar tunnel in Gösting’s Zistersdorf cadastral community, where the body is located, is currently inaccessible. The suspect detonated an explosive during an attempt to gain access to the Cobra on Saturday morning, causing damage to the building.

The safety of researchers comes first
How the executive branch wants to proceed will be decided on Sunday, police spokesman Raimund Schwaigerlehner announced. A structural engineer can be engaged; safety is generally a priority. At the same time, explosives experts are trying to clean the area as much as possible. The exact circumstances of his death were also under investigation, as was the identity of the man’s body found in the tunnel.

Small blocking circle stays in place
A small exclusion zone remained in force in Gösting on Sunday. The safety measures are expected to last until Monday. The evacuations of a dozen houses have now been lifted. The residents who were temporarily housed in Zistersdorf town hall were allowed to return to their homes around midnight on Saturday.

The murder suspect had locked himself in the basement of his ex-boss for hours. A first attempt to gain access failed on Saturday morning; one Cobra officer was seriously injured and another had to be treated as an outpatient. The man’s body was eventually discovered inside the property in the afternoon hours. For this purpose, technical equipment was introduced into the basement.

The discovery marked the end of an “extremely demanding and very stressful operation” that lasted almost 24 hours, as state police director Franz Popp put it at a press conference on Saturday. 220 officers were called in.

The suspect was classified by investigators as “generally dangerous.” The Slovak has already been noticed in several European countries for unauthorized possession of weapons and explosives. But the people around him in Gösting probably knew nothing about this: there he was seen as a very quiet and unobtrusive person.

Perpetrator and victim knew each other
At least until last Friday: The 59-year-old is said to have murdered 65-year-old Barbara R. in a vineyard with a knife that, according to his acquaintances, he always had with him. The woman was found with stab wounds around 4:30 p.m. The manager emphasized that there was an acquaintance between the perpetrator and the victim. An autopsy was ordered by order of the Korneuburg Public Prosecutor’s Office.
