Viennese of the week – record in ice: this is the coolest man in Austria

Date:

Josef Köberl is an enthusiastic ice swimmer. His latest record has not only entered Austria’s history books, but also catapulted him into the world’s elite. Our Viennese of the week.

Josef Köberl is not a fan of overcrowded swimming lakes. The danger is not that great: when Köberl goes into the water, others think about putting on skates. The Viennese par excellence is an enthusiastic ice swimmer and is one of the best in his profession. This is also confirmed by the latest record – which has now been officially confirmed by the International Ice Swimming Association in South Africa.

I will be in Zauchensee in April
Köberl made history on April 27 this year: with a distance of 2,424 meters in Zauchensee, he set the Austrian ice swimming record. The team had to complete 12 laps of 202 meters each with a water temperature of only 4.33 degrees.

Then we went to the sauna
But Köberl persevered and emerged from the water after exactly 55 minutes and 26 seconds, shaking but with an icy smile. “Then we went straight to the sauna tent,” Köberl remembers.
With this performance, Köberl catapulted himself to number 7 in the world rankings. Our Viennese of the week.
