Oliver Vitouch will be rector of the Alpen-Adria University Klagenfurt and chairman of the University Conference for a few days. In the “Krone” he looks back – and to the future.
“Krone”: You will only be working in your two university positions until October 28. What will happen in the last few days?
AAU director Oliver Vitouch: There is a wonderful quote from my principal role model; there are quite a few memoirs by rectors in the US. William G. Bowen was president of Princeton for many years and said “One of the most frustrating aspects of life in a president’s office is the recurring feeling that there is simply too much to do and never enough time to do everything that clearly needs to be done.”. So the worst thing about being a rector is that there is always too much to do on things that actually need to be done and not enough time to do everything that definitely needs to be done. And that was of course not made easier by the double appointment: the University of Klagenfurt for twelve years and the University Conference as president and vice-president for nine years. And Bowen wrote this at a time before email was widespread (laughs). That means there is still plenty to do in the last few days. This will probably also include an appeals procedure in mathematics. This includes the loan agreement that the university would like to conclude with the government and the city regarding the Bachmann Library and its exhibition in our university library. I also have to write to Maastricht University because they sent a fantastic orange-red bouquet of flowers.
