Seven self-propelled ‘Howitzer 2000’ artillery pieces arrived in Ukraine from Germany this week as part of the first delivery of heavy weapons since the start of the Russian invasion. Ukraine’s ambassador to Berlin, Andriy Melnyk, expressed the wish that “this was just an important first step in strengthening our military’s defense capabilities.” To do this, he asked the Berlin Executive to continue making new deliveries.

“The German defense industry is ready to produce 100 new self-propelled howitzers for Ukraine in the near future. We hope that Foreign Minister Olaf Scholz and his Security Council will approve the corresponding request,” he said.

The ‘Howitzer 2000’ is the most modern weapon of the Bundeswehr (German army). It resembles a huge tank and can hit targets at a distance of 40 kilometers.

Kyiv Defense Minister Oleksii Reznikov thanked his German counterpart Christine Lambrecht on Twitter for the transmission, describing the delivery as “an example of international cooperation in support of Ukraine”.

Scholz’s government has come under fire in recent weeks, initially for being hesitant to deploy heavy weapons and later for alleged slowness in handing over weapons. Berlin insisted this was due to necessary changes to defense industry protocols and the need to ensure Ukrainian soldiers were properly trained to use the weapons in question.

On the other hand, the German chancellor called for a ‘Marshall Plan’ to help Ukraine recover from the war and called for progress with such an initiative at the next EU, G7 and NATO summits. Scholz pointed out to Parliament that reconstruction is “a multigenerational task” and proposed an aid formula such as those used as early as the 20th century to revive post-war Europe.
