At least eight miners were killed in an explosion at a mine in Serbia on Friday morning. Another 20 were injured, local hospital officials confirmed to state broadcaster RTS.
The explosion occurred around 5:00 am. At that time, according to RTS, 49 miners would be in the mine. The accident at the Sokobanja mine was caused by a methane gas explosion, the reports said. Other miners may be trapped underground.
The last major accident was in January 1998 at the Sokobanja mine. After a methane explosion, 29 miners were rescued from the shaft.
