The Alpine Club is now starting again with the lecture series “Avalanche Update”, in which you will learn everything about the “White Danger”. It’s hard to believe: more and more experts are involved in accidents.
“We can no longer ignore how many experienced and trained mountaineers are affected by avalanche accidents,” explains Michael Larcher from the mountaineering department of the Austrian Alpine Club.
369 people involved in avalanche accidents
In the 2023/2024 winter season, 369 people were involved in avalanche accidents across Austria and 14 people died. Larcher: “We assume that about half of the avalanche accidents in recent years involve very experienced alpinists.”
More attention to training
“Expert, pay attention! The avalanche does not know that you are an expert.” With this statement, former Swiss avalanche expert André Roch pointed out that even the most experienced are not immune to the dangers of avalanches. Larcher emphasizes that these pitfalls should be more clearly emphasized in the future in training.
Avalanche update as live stream
Avalanche expert Michael Larcher will tour Austria and Germany again from November 27 with the well-known lecture series “Avalanche Update”. The avalanche update in Innsbruck will be available for free to anyone interested on December 12 (7 p.m.) as a livestream via the Alpine Club’s YouTube channel.
