Despite the claim, homeless people are still waiting for a climate bonus

Date:

Everyone gets it, even if they don’t need it financially: the climate bonus. But homeless people have so far been waiting in vain for support. They are entitled to this, but not a so-called drop-off point for delivery. And that naturally poses major problems for the climate ministry.

Everyone who has their main residence in Austria for a certain period of time receives the climate bonus. It is intended to absorb increases in energy prices. So far so good. But does everyone really need the money? That can be doubted.

Anyone who can probably use the climate bonus very well, but has not yet received it, is homeless. Although they do not have their own homes, most of them have temporary shelter with social associations. They accommodate these people in temporary housing.

Five Tyrolean clubs are now sounding the alarm. “Equal treatment on the basis of an informal ‘homeless person’ is factually and legally unjustified for us. This disadvantage cannot be justified in terms of climate policy,” emphasizes Stephan Blassnig of the association “Vanishing Point”. Julia Schratz of “Lilawohnt” – a point of contact for homeless women – points out that this group of people in particular suffers from high inflation: “Homeless does not mean that you have no expenses.”

Ministry: “Working on a solution”
The Climate Ministry is aware of the problem. The payment failed due to the lack of a “delivery point” according to the delivery law, it is said. Simply put: people lack a fixed address. At the request of the “Krone”, the ministry assured that a solution was being worked on at full speed. The allowance for 2022 will be paid in the summer.
