Testing dialect knowledge – Remnant dialect: Will Styria become extinct soon?

Date:

Children are expected to ‘speak beautifully’, and in cities there is an increasing ‘mixture of languages’: dialect is often seen as a barrier to learning, especially at school. Some parents do not want to pass on the dialect to their children. Are dialect speakers becoming a minority? And: How good is your Styria? Take the test!

A “Quetschn” is an accordion, “dahoam” is home, and if someone has a “Huscher” it means roof damage. What is “eh kloa” for many Styrians becomes a foreign language for many others in the Green Mark. But: “There is no Styrian dialect in this sense anyway,” says linguist Arne Ziegler, laying out the facts.
