It’s that time again: on today’s national holiday, the Heldenplatz is once again dedicated to Austria’s neutrality and freedom, crowned by the inauguration of the recruits by Federal President Alexander Van der Bellen. Younger visitors in particular admire the soldier uniforms and impressive equipment: “The soldiers are very cool here,” is the general sentiment among the youngest.
Many people use the day as an opportunity to become acquainted with the role of the armed forces and to take a look at the technical developments that the army has undergone in recent years.
A father explains why he spends this day with his family on Heldenplatz: “My child is ten years old. We haven’t been here for a long time. Today, on the national holiday, we wanted to visit again.” He is particularly impressed by the modernization of the army: “A lot has changed. Digitization has a big impact and the device has evolved in the last fifteen years that I have not been here.”
“As Austrians, you should be proud that we are free!” For example, a visitor from Styria expressed his attachment to Austria’s neutrality and independence. For him, this day is also a reminder of the privilege of living in a neutral and safe country. At the same time, he laughs about the goings-on in the city: “There are far too many people here anyway. We are not used to that in the country.”
