Accompanied by the police and fire brigade, a tow truck rushed from Lower Carinthia to Klagenfurt with dangerous batteries on the loading floor. There, the cargo was placed in a special high-voltage container.
The burning of batteries in a slow train triggered a fire brigade operation in Lower Carinthia in the spring. “Weeks later, these batteries re-ignited Monday evening,” said tow contractor Gerald Taferner, whose team was called to the rescue by emergency services. Because Taf-Rent is the only company in Carinthia that has a special high-voltage container.
“My manager was super cool and did a great job with the emergency services. The firefighters had barely cooled the batteries when they were lifted onto the loading floor and taken to Klagenfurt. Our tow truck was escorted at the front by a police car and on the rear by a fire truck if the lithium batteries were to catch fire again while driving,” Taferner told Krone newspaper.
Arriving in Klagenfurt, the highly flammable load was placed in the high-voltage container – in which electric cars must also be temporarily stored after accidents – which were then flooded with 25,000 liters of water. “Tuesday morning the water was still bubbling as the batteries burn out underwater,” explains Taferner, “So high-power batteries can be really dangerous.”
The entrepreneur expects the batteries of the slow train to be in the container for at least a week to ten days before the fire risk is finally averted.
