The fog hangs deep in the 1,000-resident community of Kirchberg ob der Donau in Upper Austria. This reflects the mood in the town on Monday morning. Because since the early hours of the morning there has been deep sadness: the mayor was found dead, shot by a hunter who is still on the run.
The emergency call came in around 8:30 am. In neighboring Altenfelden, the body of a man was found in a meadow just a few meters from the busy Rohrbacher Bundesstraße (B127) – shot by a hunter considered dangerous and still on the run.
Mayor since 2008
It soon became clear that the victim was Franz Hofer, ÖVP mayor in neighboring Kirchberg ob der Donau. The father of three children has been the local boss in the municipality of Mühlviertler since 2008 and worked professionally for the state of Upper Austria. But Hofer had been retired since May and also wanted to retire as mayor.
His great passion was hunting; Hofer was a hunt leader and in this role he could have been killed. The suspected perpetrator is a hunter who is also considered extremely dangerous.
Employees in shock
Around 9 a.m., people at the municipal office heard about the violent death of the local leader, and there has been shock and sadness ever since. The employees are informed and cared for.
