Ukraine says it has arrested a UN World Food Program worker on charges of spying for Russia. “Under the guise of volunteering, the traitor spied on the locations of the armed forces in the Pokrovsk sector,” Ukraine’s domestic intelligence service SBU said on Monday.
The 34-year-old Ukrainian was tasked with locating the positions of Ukrainian armed forces and artillery in and around the eastern Ukrainian city of Pokrovsk so that Russia could attack them. The Secret Service said the suspect faces life in prison for treason.
Pokrovsk as an important logistics hub
Moscow soldiers have been advancing westward in the Donetsk region of eastern Ukraine for months. In recent weeks, Russian troops have been approaching Pokrovsk. The city is a logistics hub for the Ukrainian army.
On Monday, the Russian army reported the capture of another village in the region. Russian soldiers have captured the town of Tsukuryne south of Pokrovsk, the Defense Ministry said.
