Microsleep causes the steering wheel to collide with the shock absorber in the tunnel

The journey of a 40-year-old car ended in the hospital. The man was driving early on Sunday morning on the A14 in the Ambergtunnel towards Tyrol when he fell asleep at the wheel.

It was shortly after midnight when the driver fell into a microsleep and lost control of his vehicle. Shortly before the first breakdown section he went further and further to the left. At the breakdown site he eventually collided with a shock absorber without braking.

The force of the impact deployed the driver’s and passenger’s side airbags. The driver was nevertheless injured and was taken by the rescue team to the state hospital in Feldkirch.

Cars only have scrap value
The car was total. Due to the rescue and clean-up work, the Ambergtunnel had to be closed in both directions for over an hour. In addition to the emergency doctor, Red Cross employees and the police were also present, the Rankweil fire brigade with four vehicles and troops from the Hohenems highway maintenance service.
