Much fewer hits than a year ago, but the number of registrations is increasing again. Asylum seekers must perform three months of community service; ten hours per month is mandatory.
“Everything happened very quickly. In Deutschkreutz, a white van stopped at an intersection on the B 62 towards the industrial area around noon. Even before the alerted police could check the suspicious vehicle, 28 Syrians and two Turks jumped from the windowless cargo hold onto the street.” These dramatic scenes of illegal migration took place just over a year ago. Such reports were almost on the agenda at the time.
The contingencies have been strengthened
According to the researchers’ investigation, the smuggling mafia expanded its contingents in the summer of 2023 and carried out transports with at least thirty refugees. Just a few hours after the operation in Deutschkreutz, forty migrants marched across the border to Nikitsch early in the morning. In the afternoon another thirty immigrants showed up there.
Nearly 3,000 migrants this year
The series of large-scale releases will be scrapped in the fall of 2023. At the beginning of this year, fewer than twenty migrants were stranded in Burgenland every seven days. However, the influx increased again until the summer of 2024. In the weeks from August 5 to mid-October, 149, 89, 143, 137, 150, 191, 295, 161, 211 and 308 migrants were registered respectively. The previous peak in 2024 was last week from October 21 to 27. 368 attacks were reported. This means that a total of 2,945 asylum seekers came to Burgenland this year. 27 smugglers were apprehended and arrested.
Migrants help nonprofits
The situation has changed somewhat for refugees staying here. Asylum seekers must perform community service for three months. According to the Ministry of the Interior, this scheme will be consistently implemented in the basic healthcare facilities of the federal government. “To date, more than 1,757 asylum seekers have been deployed for more than 101,000 hours,” reads the first assessment. About 680 asylum seekers had their pocket money reduced because they did not do charity work.
Ten hours of compulsory work
The work includes the maintenance of publicly accessible green areas and parks, but also the maintenance of sports fields owned by a municipality. “Ten hours of work per month are required,” the authority says. “Everyone who receives protection in Austria must also give something back to society,” emphasizes Minister of the Interior Gerhard Karner.
