As Ukraine moves towards EU candidate status, Russia is ramping up attacks in the east of the country. The strategically important city of Lysychansk in the Luhansk region is increasingly being targeted. On Thursday evening, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy again called for faster arms deliveries “to stop this diabolical armada and drive it out of Ukraine’s borders”.
The Ukrainian army positions in the eastern industrial area of Donbass have been bombed by the Russian army with aircraft and fired on with rockets and artillery, the general staff of Ukraine said. The nighttime situation report listed more than four dozen towns and villages that had been shelled. Russia relies heavily on artillery to advance from place to place after massive shelling.
The Russian army is approaching the city of Lysychansk from different directions. It is separated from neighboring Sieverodonetsk by a river. Sevierodonetsk is now largely under the control of Russian forces, although they still face resistance. The Russian leadership around President Vladimir Putin cited gaining control over the eastern regions of Donetsk and Luhansk as one of the goals of the war of aggression.
investigating war crimes
In his daily TV speech, Zelenskyy called for Russian war crimes to be investigated by a special court. “Russia must be held responsible for all the harm it has done to Ukraine,” he stressed. On the anniversary of Hitler’s attack by Germany on the Soviet Union in 1941, he referred to the Nuremberg Trials after World War II.
Destroyed asset database
The Ukrainian government, meanwhile, has announced that it plans to launch a database of assets destroyed by Russian forces in mid-July. For example, residential buildings destroyed in the war should be included on the list, as Deputy Digital Minister Anatoly Komirnij said. The aim is to collect data that all Ukrainians can use to, among other things, claim damages in international courts.
