On Tuesday afternoon, would-be metro surfers crashed into a pedestrian bridge while illegally riding on the roof of Vienna’s U4 Schönbrunn station. The life of an 18-year-old man is still in danger after the tragic accident. Another ‘surfer’ is also in hospital with serious injuries.
According to Wiener Linien, the quartet’s risky journey began shortly after 4 p.m. on Tuesday when the men climbed onto the roof of the U4 metro line from the direction of Hütteldorf and went for a ride.
The severity of the blow led to CPR
The daring action ended tragically: two members of the group crashed into a pedestrian bridge over the route as they entered Schönbrunn station. According to the Vienna rescue team, the force of the impact was so intense that CPR had to be performed.
The professional rescue team and the Samaritan Association took the two men to hospitals. The 18-year-old ‘surfer’ remained in life-threatening condition on Wednesday, while another man, aged 17, was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries. No details were available at this time about his condition.
Psychological support for the metro driver
A 16-year-old third ‘surfer’ escaped with minor injuries, while the fourth man – he was only 13 – apparently escaped unharmed. The metro driver received crisis psychological care. The operation of the U4 was then temporarily interrupted between Meidling Hauptstrasse and Braunschweiggasse.
Warning for “surfer” actions
The exact course of the accident must now be analyzed together with the police using video evaluation, the Wiener Linien said.
In this context, it is pointed out that such actions and tests of courage always involve danger to life: “We urgently appeal to refrain from such reckless and life-threatening actions. Not a single TikTok video, dare or selfie in the world is worth getting on a subway or tram and risking your life. Anyone who notices a dangerous situation must immediately use the emergency call systems in the vehicles or on the platform.”
To prevent such actions, the Wiener Linien focuses on prevention and education. Workshops have been held at schools for years in collaboration with the Directorate of Education and the police. Through lectures and metro tours, children and young people are made aware of the theme of safety and correct behavior in and around public transport.
