The US House of Representatives has formally approved the ongoing impeachment inquiry against President Joe Biden. 221 MPs voted in favor, 212 against. Republicans mainly accuse Biden of being involved in his son Hunter’s controversial foreign business dealings.
He is alleged to have profited from business in Ukraine and China and lied to the public. Hunter Biden has become a popular target for Republicans in recent years. The 53-year-old former lawyer, businessman and lobbyist has several legal problems. In mid-September, he was charged by the federal judiciary with illegal gun possession, and last week with tax fraud. “My father was not financially involved in my companies,” he said recently. The Republican hardliners would like to harm Joe Biden. Hunter was called in for closed-door questioning on Wednesday, but the president’s son declined and instead requested a public hearing.
Witnesses must be called
Some Republicans themselves admit that there is no evidence of wrongdoing by Joe Biden. Therefore, witnesses should be called and documents requested to be more legally stable. Despite divergent views, Republicans overwhelmingly voted in favor of the ongoing investigation, while Democrats unsurprisingly voted against it.
Because the Democrats have the majority in the Senate, impeachment is considered impossible anyway. “Instead of doing their job on the important work that needs to be done, they (Republicans, take note) are wasting time on this political ploy,” Biden himself said.
Four impeachments so far
In US history, four impeachment proceedings have been initiated against presidents: in 1868 against Andrew Johnson, in 1998 against Bill Clinton and in 2019 and 2021 against Trump, with right-wing populists first because of the so-called Ukraine affair and then because of the storming of the Capitol on January 6, 2021. Republican Richard Nixon avoided the proceedings in 1974 by resigning. No president has ever been impeached.
