Illegal construction work – Ten-storey hotel collapses in Argentina

Date:

A ten-storey hotel building collapsed in Argentina. The tragedy claimed the life of at least one person. Construction work was currently underway on the building, but apparently there was no approval from the city.

The tragedy took place early Tuesday morning near the coastal town of Villa Gesell in Buenos Aires province. There are believed to have been up to nine people in Hotel Dubrovinik at the time of the accident, including construction workers.

80-year-old died under the rubble
Rescuers tried to locate and free other victims from the rubble. An elderly woman was rescued alive from the rubble, but all help came too late for an 80-year-old, the local newspaper “Page 12” reported.

This post shows, among other things, what the hotel looked like before the collapse:

Adjacent building is also in danger of collapsing
According to provincial Security Minister Javier Alonso, hotel guests were not in the building at the time of the accident. Workers lived in another part of the building from 1986 onwards. The city’s mayor, Gustavo Barrera, warned that the adjacent building was also at risk of collapse.

Authorities imposed a construction freeze in August after unauthorized construction work was discovered in the building. Four people have been arrested and the Public Prosecution Service has opened an investigation.
