An anonymous caller contacted US police in late October saying they had found a body in a freezer in the yard of a home in Tempe, Arizona. Officials were initially skeptical due to the approaching Halloween festival, but were eventually forced to confirm the grisly find.
Neither a fantasy, nor a plastic skeleton, nor a horror decoration; a real corpse was actually discovered in the freezer in the garden of the house in question.
According to AZFamily, the property in question was owned by Joseph Hill Sr. However, the police officers were met by his son, Joseph Junior. He claimed that the father died in Oregon in 2020 and that as a son he obviously inherited the property. He was unable to produce a death certificate for his father. Officials soon discovered that Joseph Sr. had been receiving retirement benefits until 2023.
Joseph Junior did not want to give the officers access to the garden. Eventually they returned with a search warrant. Like the caller said, that’s where they came across the body. It was hidden in a large freezer covered in plastic.
Police were greeted by a strong smell of decomposition when they unearthed a “human skeleton” and “a large amount of biological mass.”
No will: son did not want to lose house
Hill subsequently admitted that the body was that of his father, who had died of natural causes four years earlier. Because he did not want to lose the house – his father had left no will and therefore not officially left the house to him – he decided to “put the body on ice” and thus cover up the death.
The body must be buried
This worked for over three years, but eventually the freezer malfunctioned and the smell of decay due to the lack of cooling brought the neighbors to the scene. By then, Hill Jr. had already purchased a small plot of land in a remote area where he planned to bury his father. But he had to postpone the funeral plan several times “because there were always people walking around.” He was arrested.
