The flight was cancelled, no information, chaotic conditions at the airports: The holiday relaxation of a “Krone” reader from Vienna was quickly gone when he was confronted with the cancellation of his flight home – we reported – faced. In the meantime, the return journey, including a stopover to Vienna, had been successful – but at Schwechat Airport the Viennese already had to deal with the following problem…
Numerous travelers currently share a similar fate. Staff shortages and bottlenecks are already having a serious impact on air traffic, even before the start of the main travel season in the summer. Flights are canceled in rows, the number of those affected is increasing and increasing.
Chaos at baggage handling
Here’s what happened to a Viennese “Krone” reader who was due to fly home Monday afternoon after a holiday with friends in London. But the AUA flight to Vienna: cancelled. The reason AUA gives to krone.at: problems with baggage handling at Heathrow Airport, flight cancellations by all airlines to avoid chaos and minimize passenger numbers.
For the reader, this meant looking for alternative accommodation for the night, an alternative plane transfer to Vienna, including a stopover in Zurich the following day.
Next shock at Vienna airport
The journey home went without further incident. The Viennese landed at Schwechat airport on Tuesday afternoon. At the baggage claim, the relaxation and joy of being back in Vienna quickly evaporated: “Big surprise, the suitcases were not there”, according to the reader. “Yeah, not even on the plane, as we found out.”
The exact whereabouts – unclear. According to the AUA message, at least the luggage has been found. However, it is uncertain when the suitcases will find their way to Vienna. “I gave up trying to get information over the phone after about 45 minutes because no one picked up.” And so it is for the Viennese, who is disappointed with the airline: try again and wait.
An easing of the current situation should not be expected in the short term. After all, airports all over the world are struggling with the increasing number of passengers.
