They warn that the area’s population is “at immediate risk of death from disease, famine or violence.” “This blatant disregard for the fundamental idea of humanity and the laws of war must end,” the UN humanitarian leaders demanded in unison.
The heads of the 15 United Nations humanitarian agencies this Friday united in denouncing the “apocalyptic” situation in northern Gaza, the scene of a month-long Israeli operation against Hamas.
Medical authorities in the enclave have reported that the Israeli operation has caused hundreds of civilian casualties in a month. Israel continues to maintain that its intention is to prevent Hamas militias from relocating in the area.
In their statement, the heads of agencies such as the Children’s Fund say (UNICEF), the High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), the World Health Organization (WHO), the World Food Program or the Palestinian Refugee Agency (UNRWA) They denounce that hospitals in northern Gaza are “virtually isolated from supplies” and that several patients and doctors have died as a result of the fighting.
The signatories claim that schools have been destroyed and that they have lost contact with those responsible for caring for victims of sexual abuse. They denounce that livestock and crops are dying and that agricultural food systems “have been decimated” and conclude that “the entire population of northern Gaza is at immediate risk of death from disease, famine or violence.”
UN agency leaders assert the importance of UNRWA following the suspension of its functions announced by the Israeli parliament which, if implemented, “would spell a catastrophe for the humanitarian response in Gaza.”
“This blatant disregard for the fundamental idea of humanity and the laws of war must end,” the UN humanitarian leaders demanded in unison.
“The entire region is on the brink of an abyss. An immediate cessation of hostilities and an unconditional and lasting ceasefire is long overdue,” they conclude.
