Greenpeace test – Ice cream products usually contain genetic engineering

Date:

In line with the season, environmental organization Greenpeace has taken a closer look at the ice cream range in Austrian supermarkets. The central result: the use of genetically modified animal feed can only be excluded for a fifth of the ice cream on the market. Ice cream made with non-GMO milk is also not available in every supermarket, but only in five out of nine.

“For pure ice cream enjoyment, Greenpeace recommends organic products, vegan ice cream and ice cream made from local milk. No genetically modified feed is used here. Organic ice cream and especially vegan products score with a significantly better climate balance,” says Sebastian Theissing-Matei of Greenpeace Austria. However, the range of these products is smaller. For example, only four percent of all products examined, from ice creams to family packaging, were produced organically and therefore environmentally friendly. Vegan ice cream already made up ten percent of the range. Interspar currently has the largest range of organic and GMO-free ice cream. Second place went to MPreis in Tirol, both with a “Good”.

Beware of Unilever products
Greenpeace advises caution with Unilever products, including brands such as Eskimo, Cremissimo and Cornetto. The group does not provide any information about the quality or origin of the ingredients. He also does not offer organic ice cream. It is better to use ice cream made from local ingredients. Since 2010, no genetically engineered soy from the destruction of the rainforest has made it into the cows’ feed troughs when it comes to ice cream made from fresh Austrian milk. This is available, for example, from Interspar, Spar, MPreis and Unimarkt. However, the share was only five percent of all examined products. In total, the Austrian supermarkets offer more than 200 different ice cream products.

“To protect our environment, manufacturers and retailers must now quickly and significantly expand the range of ice cream without animal ingredients, GMO-free ice cream and organic ice cream,” claims Theissing-Matei. The current result is disappointing from an environmental point of view.
