The wonderful autumn weather creates a rush to the mountains. One of the consequences: Styria’s mountain rescue service currently has to go out to injured hikers very often. In Eisenerz, the emergency services were alerted several times within an hour on Friday.
The members of the Eisenerz mountain rescue department had to complete several missions on Friday between noon and 1 p.m. First, a paraglider (48) fell shortly before attempting to take off on a hiking trail in the steep meadow area, injuring his foot.
Due to the pain, the injured man could no longer descend into the valley independently. His partner then called Alpine emergency number 140, and the 48-year-old was flown to UKH Kalwang by C14 emergency medical helicopter.
Around the same time, a group of nine set out to climb the so-called “Kaiser Franz Joseph” via ferrata on Lake Leopoldstein. After just a few meters, two people from the inexperienced group lost their strength and had to turn back.
Inexperienced climbing group
At around 12.10pm the rest of the group was about halfway up the demanding via ferrata when a 53 year old lost his strength and fell into the via ferrata.
He fell on a climber (28) who was standing a few meters behind him. The 28-year-old also fell into her via ferrata belay – both were injured and became stuck in the via ferrata. Another member of the group alerted the mountain rescue service. The two people were rescued with rope and flown to the LKH Judenburg with the emergency helicopter.
