King Felipe VI and his wife Letizia traveled on Sunday to Valencia, which was hit hard by the flood disaster, to meet the population affected by the storm and inspect the terrible damage. But instead of being welcomed with open arms, they were pelted with mud, stones, bottles and sticks by the angry citizens of Paiporta.
King Felipe VI and his wife Letizia are certainly used to more hospitality. In the municipality of Paiporta in the Spanish province of Valencia, residents expressed their anger – and certainly their despair. They threw stones, mud, sticks and bottles at the royal couple and insulted the royal family.
Although Felipe seems to endure this with stoic calm, the turmoil visibly affects his wife Letizia. She seems shocked, is surrounded hand and foot by security guards and is shielded as best as possible from the flying projectiles. Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez and regional President Carlos Mazón also had to push their way through the angry crowd.
So far, 272 people have died after the terrible flood, clean-up efforts are underway, but many people are left with nothing.
