Air France has suspended its flights over the Red Sea until further notice. This was done as a “precautionary measure”, the French airline said on Sunday. She justified the decision with a “luminous object” that the crew of a plane had seen “at a high altitude” over Sudan.
According to aviation industry sources, Air France is the only airline to have suspended flights across the Red Sea. As the airline further announced, the routes of several flights have been changed.
Two planes returned to Paris
The plane returned on two flights, landing back in Paris; one flight from the French capital to Antananarivo in Madagascar and one from Paris to Nairobi in Kenya were affected.
The Red Sea region has been characterized by major instability since November 2023. Yemen’s pro-Iranian Houthi militia has since used rockets and drones to attack ships they claim have links to Israel – justifying the attacks with “solidarity” with Palestinians in the Gaza Strip.
The attacks have severely disrupted shipping in the region, which is important for global trade.
