A fatal accident in Ticino’s Blenio Valley shocked Switzerland: a cave diver did not return on Saturday and was later found dead at a depth of more than 40 meters. Retrieving the body is extremely difficult and will take several days.
As the cantonal police announced on Monday, the man died at the source of the Brenno River. According to an initial reconstruction, the man dived into the cave late Saturday morning and never returned.
Helicopter in action
Specialists from the Swiss Society for Caving Research were flown in from German-speaking Switzerland in a Rega helicopter to support the police.
In the evening, the lifeless body was found at a depth of more than 40 meters and about 200 meters from the entrance.
The search was complicated by the small diameter of the passages, the nature of the cave and poor visibility in the water. The rescue began Sunday and required numerous dives. It was not yet possible to identify the victim.
