Mountain Rescue Tips – How To Behave Correctly During Thunderstorms

Date:

The coming days will be irresistible – the Tyrolean mountain rescue service therefore strongly advises mountain enthusiasts to heed some safety tips. According to the experts, travel planning is especially important.

Two German mountaineers (27) were struck by lightning on Tuesday on their way to the Brandjochspitze on the Nordkette. It hit the steel cable they were holding on to. The helicopter rescued the injured. The accident happened after 4 p.m.

Study the weather forecast carefully before a tour
“Many mountaineers start too late in the summer,” says Christian Eder, Alpine Training Manager of the Tyrolean Mountain Rescue Service. He knows this has now become a cardinal mistake. “Unlike in the past, people no longer want to get up early in the morning.” This, in combination with an early return, is an absolute must in the warm season.

No one should go into the mountains in the summer without carefully studying the weather forecast when planning a trip. If there is a risk of thunderstorms, long via ferratas with no possibility of disembarking should be avoided.

Make small, take shelter and go no further
As soon as a storm is visible in the sky, you should leave unprotected places and avoid hilly terrain if possible. “Of course everyone can be surprised by a thunderstorm from time to time,” says the training manager. “Then you have to take shelter under a rock or sit in a pit. Going further, maybe even taking big steps, is taboo!” Because the current can flow through the body via the so-called step voltage if lightning strikes in the immediate vicinity.

Make small and wait is the motto. And never seek supposed protection under a free-standing tree!
