EU membership makes sense? – Ukraine is the poorhouse of Europe!

Date:

Russia’s war of aggression in Ukraine has been raging for 120 days, bringing the country an important step closer to EU membership. However, a look at the financial situation shows that Ukraine has an “external financing need” of $5 billion a month and is also one of the most corrupt countries in the world.

In the Russian war of aggression, Ukraine is waging a heroic battle against the invaders – though it seems to be losing more and more militarily. The strategically vital twin cities of Sievjerodonetsk and Lysychansk are under constant Russian attack. The governor of the region speaks of “catastrophic destruction”: “Anything that can burn burns!”

Probably need a strong cash injection
The war takes hundreds of lives every day and makes Ukraine, already the poor home of Europe, much poorer. In order to keep the state reasonably functional, the International Monetary Fund expects an “external borrowing requirement”, ie necessary subsidies from outside, of $5 billion a month.

corruption everywhere
However, the question remains unanswered whether the money in Ukraine actually ends up where it is needed. Since corruption is endemic in the country, thus ubiquitous, nothing works in Ukraine without bribes – from small sums, for example, to visit a doctor, or billions on a large scale.

Help brought only “inadequate results”
The organization Transparency International places Ukraine in 122nd place out of 180 countries in the international index. Only a few places for Russia in 136th place. According to the European Court of Auditors, all attempts by the EU to take countermeasures with large amounts of money have produced only “inadequate results”. President Zelensky is no exception.
