Styrian aronia farmer Herbert Gartner just wanted to look at his berries – and suddenly found himself in the middle of a wild chase! Thanks to him, a brutal gang of burglars was stopped.
Aronia farmer Herbert Gartner will never forget this: It is thanks to him that a four-man burglary gang from Hungary (24, 26, 37, 44) was arrested.
It was a summer evening in August this year. Herbert Gartner from Paurach in Feldbach had to drive to an aronia warehouse in Gniebing every three hours to thaw the ice because the automatic system failed. On the way he saw two men in dark clothing getting into a car near the chapel. He became suspicious and called 911. “I told the lady I was in hot pursuit.”
Wild maneuver on the roundabout
Things moved quickly on the B 68, because the burglars had spotted the Styrian and tried to shake him off at a roundabout. The passionate hunter immediately recognized the feint and was back on their heels. Until he blocked the criminals’ way with his car at the Fladnitz fire brigade. “Just like in the movie, they tried to push my car, the tires were smoking,” Gartner said.
The perpetrators actually managed to escape. But soon after, the handcuffs clicked on her: her car took off on a traffic island and ended up in a guardrail. “You don’t have to do it like I did. But don’t look away and call the police!”, says Gartner afterwards.
As the police announced months later, the gang caused damage of around 100,000 euros during burglaries and thefts. Thanks to the brave farmer, the men were able to rest.
