The passengers of a Boeing 737 experienced a moment of shock on Tuesday, shortly before the plane took off from Jayapura Airport in New Guinea. Flames suddenly erupted from one of the plane’s engines (see video above).
The Trigana Air Boeing 737-500 was about to take off from Sentani Airport, about 23 kilometers west of Jayapura – the capital of Indonesia’s Papua province on the island of New Guinea – when flames erupted from its left engine.
Passenger opened an emergency exit
The take-off was aborted at the last minute and the passengers and crew were able to leave the Boeing aircraft via the emergency exits. A passenger opened an emergency exit “when he saw fire coming from the engine,” an airport spokesman said.
Four passengers were injured after pushing and shoving each other through the emergency exit as they exited the plane. They were immediately treated at the Sentani Airport Health Centre, it was said.
Numerous malfunctions with Boeing aircraft
The incident follows numerous other accidents involving Boeing aircraft. The company has been in ongoing crisis since the crashes of two 737 Max planes that killed a total of 346 more than five years ago.
