Late in the evening you can already feel and smell it, winter – and soon the chains will rattle again and the creepy figures from the underworld will join us again. Here you can read what the ancient use of the Krampus entails, how they differ from the rugged Perchten and where you can encounter them.
The Krampus – derived from the Middle High German term “Kramp” (claws) – was actually only placed as a servant on St Nicholas’ side around the year 1700. While his noble, good-natured master praises the children based on his year-round notes in his golden book, his rough companion is responsible for punishing the naughty girls and boys. In the past, the particularly bad kids were put in the trunk, taken to the city limits and released again. Nowadays the Krampus is limited to a few ‘soft’ strokes with the rod.
