“We understand the sacred ringing during the day.” But when Mathias V. and his girlfriend entered the apartment right next to the Gerasdorf Church, there was literally a rude awakening: because the ringing continued even at night – every fifteen minutes and every fifteen minutes. more Every hour on the hour there is an extra jingle. But the couple fell on deaf ears to the priest.
“We are increasingly hearing from restless citizens complaining about the bells ringing all night long – we are certainly one of them here. Mathias V. and his partner have been desperate since they moved to their new apartment in Gerasdorf, right!” opposite the church. The shock came on the first evening, they say: “The tower bell rings every fifteen minutes, even after 10 p.m. Every whole hour there are four bells – and there is also a chime for the number of hours,” said the irritated 48-year-old, who, for example, had a total of 15 bells ringing in his ears in the hour until 5 a.m. when I am alone.
“Leader in sacred tinkling”
When we went through the apartment, we expected ringing bells, “although in our opinion the priest generally exaggerates the number of sacred ringing bells. We used to live close to the church, but this is clearly the ‘frontrunner’ when it comes to tinkering,” says Mathias.
The lack of sleep and the powerlessness towards the church leaders that nothing will change is getting on the nerves of the two Gerasdorfers: “It has already reached the point of a burnout,” Mathias reports. However, a move is still not an option for the couple.
Pastor and parish council are against ‘night silence’
“When we contacted the neighbors, the first thing they found out was that we could do something about it together,” says Mathias. The first point of contact was of course the priest. “He claimed that this was not technically possible.” As a result, it was agreed to discuss the matter in the parish council – result: negative.
“As a sign of goodwill, we even sought individual conversations with representatives of the parishes. “It’s just that many people live so far away that they didn’t know about the problem,” says Mathias. Nevertheless, there was no insight – and neither was the deacon, who had apparently been rejected by the church building authority, as Mathias explains.
When attempts were made to contact the parish, the “Krone” showed no mercy – or no response. However, during the research it became clear that the desire for more peace, especially in tourist areas and large cities, is not an isolated phenomenon.
