The state security service in Germany is investigating suspected anti-Semitic insults and threats against Jewish youth football players in Berlin. Investigations have been launched into public order, sedition and official insult, the police announced on Sunday.
The State Security Police is responsible for crimes with a suspected political or extremist background.
Germany-wide consternation over incidents
The incidents, which allegedly took place after a youth team from TuS Makkabi Berlin played at DJK Schwarz-Weiß Neukölln on Thursday, caused an uproar across Germany. According to the police statement, a group of unknown people insulted the Makkabi players and made anti-Semitic comments against them.
There is also alleged to have been a physical altercation in which the unknown suspects were armed with sticks and knives. The police were not alerted that day. Berlin domestic senator Iris Spranger (SPD) responded to the reports by calling for harsh consequences.
Berlin’s “Tagesspiegel” previously reported that a representative of Schwarz-Weiß Neukölln said the attacks mainly came from the spectator area. The club says it wants to help clarify what happened.
Police protection
As the German Press Agency has learned from security circles, all matches of the Berlin Makkabi club teams this weekend were protected by the police. There were no special incidents at the away match of Makkabi’s first team in Ahrensfelde on Saturday.
