At least three people were killed when an apartment building collapsed in Santander in northern Spain on Saturday. Eight injured people were taken to hospitals, according to the emergency service of Cantabria – an autonomous region on the north coast.
Before the collapse, there was an explosion that caused a fire. This has now been removed. The search for victims in the rubble continued, it was said in the afternoon.
Residents of adjacent buildings were also injured
Among the injured were residents of neighboring buildings, some of which were also severely damaged, state television RTVE reported, citing authorities.
Most of the injured were treated in intensive care. Two police officers were also slightly injured during the rescue operation, it was said. According to RTVE, a total of 21 people lived in the building involved in the accident.
Collapse probably caused by a gas explosion
The building collapsed in the early hours of the morning, probably due to a gas explosion, the representative of the Spanish central government in the region, Eugenia Gomez de Diego, told RTVE.
