Austria on Tuesday extended border controls to the Schengen countries Hungary and Slovenia for another six months until May 11 next year in the fight against illegal migration.
“Border controls are and will remain a decisive factor in the fight against illegal migration,” said Interior Minister Gerhard Karner of the ÖVP.
The measures have led to a “huge reduction in the number of arrests” and the “smuggling mafia” now avoids Austria.
Only on October 22 did Austria extend its extraordinary controls at the Schengen border with the Czech Republic and Slovakia until April 15, 2025, due to concerns about illegal migration.
- In addition to Austria, internal border controls are also carried out in Germany, Denmark, France, Italy, Norway, Sweden and Slovenia.
- From December 9, the Netherlands will also control the borders with Belgium and Germany.
Border controls are in fact not planned within the Schengen area and must be reported to the European Commission.
