Tip from Mikl-Leitner to save ball gowns caused ridicule

Date:

Politicians are often accused of being far removed from the reality of the ordinary citizen. An irritating savings tip from Lower Austrian governor Johanna Mikl-Leitner does nothing to refute this accusation. Instead, the statement brought her a lot of malice and criticism.

Mikl-Leitner actually wanted to give a tip at a climate conference about how we can simultaneously protect the climate and the wallet against global warming and runaway inflation. Her suggestion: “Everyone can start with themselves. It starts with the clothes, that you don’t have to have ten ball gowns, but three ball gowns”.

That the average Austrian barely has three ball gowns in his wardrobe, let alone ten, and that balls themselves may not play such a big part in the lives of many, has apparently eluded the Lower Austrian ÖVP boss. Most save on normal clothes.

The clip was shown on “Welcome Austria”, where the country manager was teased by moderators Christoph Grisemann and Dirk Stermann. “Your climate tips are legendary! And so that especially us little men and women know how we can change something ecologically so that the world becomes a better place,” Stermann said sarcastically.

Arrogant and condescending”
The video went viral on the internet, where Mikl-Leitner was not only ridiculed but also harshly criticized: “The highest inflation in decades does not prevent the population from treating the population arrogantly and condescendingly,” wrote Franz Schnabl, SPÖ chief. in Lower Austria on Twitter. He immediately followed: “Federal Government Tutorial, Fall 2022, on Saving Gas: ‘Take 3 Ball Gowns and Burn Them in the Furnace!'”.

Some were amused, others angry: In any case, the ÖVP governor and her narrator were gleefully taunted on social media (see above).
