In Italy, a postman failed to deliver numerous letters for a period of at least ten years. An official in Cassino, in the south of the country, became suspicious as complaints increased from citizens receiving reminders for bills that were never delivered to them. When the investigation began, police found thousands of letters in the employees’ homes.
There was initially no conclusive explanation for the woman’s behavior. It is still being checked whether she has also kept packages for herself and possibly opened them. She would then also have to undergo proceedings for violation of postal secrecy. The collected letters weighed a total of 40 kilograms.
Invoices from 2014
According to current knowledge, the oldest letter the woman had hoarded was an electricity bill from 2014. The postwoman was fired and is now being held responsible for “misappropriation of correspondence”. She is threatened with dismissal.
