The online portal “hang.hu” reported on Thursday about an international hacker attack on the server of the Hungarian Army Procurement Agency (VBÜ). While the hackers on their website demanded a ransom of five million dollars (4.70 million euros) from the Hungarian state not to publish the data, screenshots of secret military information had already appeared on the darknet.
This concerned details about the defense capacity of the Hungarian army or the purchase of military equipment. However, this information also shows that a total purchasing freeze is planned for 2025. The extortionists had already posted the screenshots on the internet on November 6, the portal reported.
Ransomware attack
The attack was likely carried out using ransomware, the portal quoted an IT security expert, Ferenc Frész. He was the first to make the information about the hacker attack public on his Facebook page.
INC Ransomware is an international group that uses an extortion virus to primarily attack the systems of government agencies and large corporations in the US and Europe. The attack is said to have taken place in October. The VBÜ website announced on Thursday morning that it could not be reached due to an “IT malfunction”.
Upon request, the Hungarian Ministry of Defense confirmed to the portal hvg.hu that “an international hacker group had attacked the VBÜ’s IT systems.” Due to the ongoing investigation, no further information could be provided, the report said.
