Plans are progressing in Iran for a ‘rehabilitation clinic’ for women who do not adhere to strict dress codes. The initiative comes from an authority that monitors compliance with Islamic virtues in society.
The authority announced that the new facility was intended to “provide women with psychological care, healing and guidance back to Islamic virtues” rather than reporting and convicting them for dress code violations.
“That’s a joke”
The news about the re-education clinic causes misunderstanding in Iran. “This is a joke,” said the news portal “Khabar-Online”.
The government officially distances itself
On social media, some women expressed amusement and spoke of an act of desperation by the Islamic leaders. Even the government of President Massoud Pezeshkian distanced itself from the plan on Wednesday, insisting it had nothing to do with the case.
More and more women are ignoring Islamic dress codes
Since the start of the women’s movement in September 2022, more and more women have been ignoring the Islamic dress code and also renounced the mandatory headscarf in public. Even the strict and sometimes violent controls of the moral watchdog could not stop development.
The women’s protests were caused by the death of the young Iranian Kurdish woman Jina Mahsa Amini. Because some strands of hair were visible under her headscarf, she was arrested by the moral police. She later died in police custody.
