According to a senior adviser to President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, up to 13,000 Ukrainian soldiers have already been killed in fighting against Russia. There are official estimates from the General Staff – “and they put it at 10,000 to 13,000 deaths,” Mykhailo Podoliak said Thursday.
Selenskyj will provide the exact numbers “when the right time has come,” explains Podoljak. The president announced in June that 60 to 100 Ukrainian soldiers are killed and about 500 wounded every day. For his part, Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu spoke in September of more than 5,900 Russian soldiers killed.
Both sides are expected to report fewer casualties than they actually are so as not to damage the morale of their soldiers. The information cannot be independently verified.
The US estimates that more than 100,000 Russian servicemen have been killed or injured since the start of Russia’s offensive war in Ukraine in February. A similar number of casualties are likely on the Ukrainian side, US General Mark Milley said in November.
