A subsidiary of XXXLutz secures the furniture store in the district capital, which has been vacant since the first bankruptcy. There are rumors again about a furniture store that smokes in Pongau.
“Kika St. Johann says thank you!”, which is what it says on the Kika/Leiner company website. The furniture store has been closed since July 29, 2023. Financial turbulence forced the Kika/Leiner Group to close several branches. St. Johann and Saalfelden were among them. Even under new ownership, the furniture store chain has since failed to fully regain its position. Only recently did they go bankrupt again. Hundreds of jobs are on the verge of collapse. The group’s remaining two locations in Eugendorf and the city of Salzburg are currently threatened with closure.
“Don’t know anything about it”
Competitor XXXLutz, on the other hand, is doing good business and expanding throughout Europe. The group from Wels has now also expanded with a subsidiary in Pongau and has purchased the Kika building in St. Johann, which had been abandoned since last year. “I have no idea what the company plans to do with it. We know nothing about it,” says St. Johann city manager Eveline Huber (SPÖ).
Huber’s counterpart from neighboring Bischofshofen also knows nothing about the purchase or the company’s future plans. But persistent rumors have been circulating for years: XXXLutz wanted to close his store in Bischofshofen or convert it into a Möbelix branch. Expansion of the furniture store has always failed so far.
New branch in St. Johann? No response to request
A new, modern XXXLutz would be built on an area of over 10,000 square meters in the district capital of St. Johann. Europe’s second largest furniture retailer has acquired the space through the purchase of Kika. A “Krone” question about this remained unanswered by the XXXLutz press department.
