Christian funeral – After a bloody act: “Do murderers go to heaven?”

Date:

The report on the funeral of suspected double murderer Roland Drexler caused heated debates online. The “Crown” wanted to know if sinners could receive a Christian burial. Yes, says a press spokesperson for the Linz diocese, but he also gives reasons for exclusion for the last option.

“My condolences go out to all family members and friends. But he himself is more likely to be in hell than in heaven right now.” There is heated debate online about whether a Christian burial was appropriate for the double murderer Roland Drexler from the Mühlviertel.

Canon law sets rules
Who can hope for such a funeral is governed by canon law. “The only people who are excluded are those who have permanently appeared publicly as sinners or who have left the church during their lifetime,” explains Michael Kraml, press spokesman for the Diocese of Linz. Until 1983, suicide was also a reason for exclusion.

When in doubt, the bishop decides
If a priest has concerns about a Christian burial, he should express his concerns to the bishop, who must ultimately make the decision. The funeral of the double murderer was also a pastoral service for the relatives. “The church must strive to ensure that they are not excluded, but rather become part of the community again,” says Kraml.

Forgiveness plays a big role
Forgiveness plays a major role in the Catholic Church anyway. Kraml gives an example: “The rosary reads: ‘We pray for those who need your grace most.’ So, for example, those who were guilty.” But will the murderer now go to heaven? Pastor Rupert Granegger from Altenfelden answered this question with “yes”.

Everyone is and remains someone’s child. Or in the case of the amok hunter from the Mühlviertel, someone’s father, ex-husband, friend or colleague. Although he is said to have broken with part of his family, the bad behavior of family ties is deeply ingrained in the souls of many compatriots.

After such terrible acts, it is not unusual for people to say that “they have always been quite funny.” Just as no one wants to be in the shoes of the victims’ family members, no one wants to be in the shoes of the double murderer’s family. Only time will tell if the family will succeed in dropping this stigma. In any case, they are innocent of the murders.
