Several women describe sexual violence on the world-famous Sint-Jacobsweg. There have been reports of persecution, exhibitionist behavior and even abuse.
The Camino Francés leads pilgrims from the Pyrenees to the Tomb of Saint James and has existed, as it is still followed, since the 11th century. But the walk is not without danger, especially for women traveling alone.
Sexual harassment on the Camino is widespread. The founder of the online forum ‘Camigas’, Lorena Gaibor, told the ‘Guardian’ that she regularly receives similar descriptions from women. The network serves for the exchange of pilgrims on the Way of St. James.
Nine women told the British newspaper ‘Guardian’ about their negative experiences. Most incidents took place in remote areas without witnesses. It is feared that the number of unreported cases is much higher. Last year alone, it is estimated that approximately 230,000 women walked the Way of St. James.
Poor mobile connection
The police are now said to have increased their presence. For example, masturbating in public is considered a form of sexual harassment in Spain. However, the perpetrators are often able to escape. In 2023, five cases of exhibitionism on the Caminho Portugues were officially reported to the Portuguese police. However, no arrests were made. What makes matters worse is that mobile phone connectivity is poor on some routes, making it difficult for victims to get help in time.
