East Tyrolean veteran – donation cyclist has raised 900,000 euros and wants more

Date:

East Tyrolean charity cyclist Ulrich Mattersberger has been collecting donations and pedaling hard for about 30 years. This year he is again caring for a needy family and has set up a special campaign.

Even at the age of 70, the cheerful East Tyrolean ‘donation cyclist’ Ulrich Mattersberger never gets tired. Every day he does a lot of work on his ergometer, as he reveals: “When I get up, my body demands that I cycle 70 kilometers, go to the gym and then cycle another 50 kilometers.” It has already become a habit. This year it is already 35,000 kilometers – almost around the world.

Since he no longer participates in competitions, he uses his passion as motivation to cycle for charity. Over the past thirty years he has raised more than 900,000 euros for charities.

One euro per kilometer
Of particular concern to him is an East Tyrolean family he met at a fundraising event: “It’s about a mother with two seriously ill children. She herself suffers from cancer. Because she isn’t feeling well, I wanted to do something for her.” Without further ado, he organized a campaign in which he wants to cycle 5,000 kilometers before December 23.

He donates one euro for every kilometer. “When companies or people participate, it is even more satisfying.”

To make a dream come true, he gave himself a gift for his 70th birthday. Together with his son, he wanted to cycle along the Glocknerstrasse to the roof of Austria in less than 70 minutes. “I did it in ’67,” laughs the East Tyrolean original.
