Before taking up his position in Hoffenheim on Monday, he thanked the Sturm fans in an emotional farewell speech: “I have always been a little afraid of this day, when I will be Sturm coach for the last time. It was a great time, I had incredible support. In four and a half years I haven’t heard a whistle, we haven’t won every match, but you always cheered us on and said goodbye with applause. You have been an important part of our journey. Thank you!”
