Tropical Storm Man-yi, which is approaching the Philippines, became a super typhoon on Saturday, according to the state weather service. Meteorologists warned of “significant to severe impacts” from the winds and “life-threatening” storm surges.
Seas of up to 14 meters were expected around Catanduanes Island, where the super typhoon is expected to make landfall later Saturday or early Sunday.
Sixth storm in a few weeks
Man-yi will be the sixth major storm to hit the Philippines in several weeks. According to authorities, around 255,000 people have already been evacuated from regions particularly at risk of landslides, flooding and storm surges in preparation for the storm.
The Philippines is hit by about twenty severe storms every year, always causing countless deaths. Moreover, the weather phenomena plunge millions of people into poverty. Climate change causes storms to form closer to the coast, gain strength faster and stay over land longer.
