After the accident at the Schwechat refinery, OMV reports “significant progress” in installing an alternative supply system. The full operation is expected in the fall.
“We have been working with our customers on a delivery plan to build a robust third-party delivery system and our team is working around the clock to meet our customers’ demand,” Michael Sattler shared on Twitter. He heads the relevant working group at OMV. Full operation is expected in the second half of the third quarter of 2022, i.e. in the autumn.
Alternative power system for the duration of the repair
According to the company, the alternative supply system, which will be put in place for the duration of the repairs, is built on three pillars: “Utilizing the capabilities of the group’s refinery network, short-term adjustments to existing production capacities in the refinery and close collaboration with partners to amounts to compensate.”
As reported, a mechanical incident at the Schwechat refinery (Lower Austria) on June 3 left two people with minor injuries. The main crude oil distillation plant was damaged, especially the outer skin in the lower part of the column, which the oil company said is difficult to access. Thanks to a smaller factory, production does not come to a complete standstill. In addition, the state released reserves of diesel and petrol.
The refinery has been shut down since April 19 for maintenance. “At that time you live off the stocks and they were almost exhausted then, so it was necessary to actually use some of the reserves,” said CEO Alfred Stern at the time. Part of the repair costs are reimbursed by the insurance.
