Minister angry: – Abortion-Aus in the US a “huge step backwards”

Date:

International waves are rising after the US Supreme Court’s decision to overturn the liberal abortion law in the United States. While former US President Barack Obama called on people to protest in the streets, Austrian Justice Minister Alma Zadic (Greens) made the decision to harden the court: it was simply nothing less than a “civilizational step backwards”.

“The criminalization of abortion does not abolish it, but forces women to use unsafe methods. This decision endangers and ignores the lives of women,” the minister said via Twitter.

The Supreme Court’s decision was “a huge step backwards. It angers me that half a century after the right to abortion was introduced, this fundamental right is now being abolished,” she says very clearly.

Biden: ‘Realization of an extreme ideology’
The decision also received little approval from US President Joe Biden: “In my opinion, it is the realization of an extreme ideology and a tragic mistake by the Supreme Court,” Biden said in Washington on Friday. “I will do everything in my power to combat this deeply un-American attack.” Congress must act now to have the final say on the issue. “It’s not over yet,” Biden said.

Obama: “Join activists”
Former US President Barack Obama also called for resistance. “Today, the Supreme Court not only reversed nearly 50 years of precedent, it left the most personal decision anyone can make to the whim of politicians and ideologues — and attacked the fundamental freedoms of millions of Americans,” Obama wrote on Twitter.

Obama also shared an image with the caption: “Join the activists who have been ringing the bell over abortion access for years and take action. Stand with them at a local protest,” it read. His wife Michelle Obama wrote: “I am heartbroken for the people in this country who have just lost the fundamental right to make informed decisions about their own bodies.” The judge’s ruling should be a wake-up call, especially for young people.

Trump: “Win for life”
Ex-President Donald Trump praised the Supreme Court decision as a “victory for life”. This was only possible because he had appointed three conservative judges to the Supreme Court. “It was a great honor for me to do this,” he wrote in a statement. Despite the ‘radical left’ there is still hope to save the country. During his tenure, Trump appointed Justices Neil Gorsuch, Brett Kavanaugh and Amy Comey Barrett. In doing so, he clearly shifted the majority in the court to the right: to six of the nine seats.

‘Constitution does not give right to abortion’
“The constitution does not grant the right to abortion,” the verdict reads. The decision does not come as a surprise: the magazine “Politico” published a draft of it in early May. This already showed that the court wants to rule in this way. There was protest from women’s rights organizations, clinics and liberals. The verdict is now as drastic as expected. Extensive restrictions are now likely in about half of the states.

There is no federal law in the United States that allows or prohibits abortion. However, abortions are allowed until the fetus is viable – around the 24th week today. This has been ensured thus far by a landmark US Supreme Court ruling of 1973 known as Roe v. Wade. Another 1992 ruling, Planned Parenthood v. Casey, reinforced the case law and modified it slightly. The Supreme Court has now quashed these decisions.
